ACHIEVING YEAR HERE'S MISSION WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT OUR PARTNERS
From small independent community centres to government departments, and from design studios to multinational banks, our network of partners are as diverse as they come.
Our passion for partnership is derived from two beliefs. First, that learning is enriched by interactions with the real world. And second, that social purpose organisations have so much more to gain from talented and enthusiastic young people than they currently do.
Our partners host Fellows on their placement, commission them to undertake community engagement work, provide them with accommodation in flats that would otherwise be empty, and train them up in specialist skills.
HOST A FELLOW
Our placements, from services run by large charities like Centrepoint through to individual services like Staywell in Kingston, tell us that Fellows add real value and create tangible benefits for the people that they work with.
Fellows join their frontline service placement for 4.5 days per week over a 20-week period. During this time, Fellows work on an innovation project.
Placement organisations are asked to make a financial contribution that subsidises the overall cost of the programme to the Fellow.
“NADIA'S ENERGY, PASSION AND PROFESSIONALISM, AND THE ABILITY TO REMAIN CALM UNDER PRESSURE ENABLED HER TO CARRY OUT ALL ASPECTS OF HER WORK TO AN EXCELLENT STANDARD AT ALL TIMES. SHE BROUGHT ENTHUSIASM AND A NEW VIBRANCY TO THE BRADBURY CENTRE WITH HER INNOVATIVE IDEAS FOR NEW EVENTS.”
Laura O’Brien, Bradbury Centre Manager, Staywell Services
HIRE A TEAM OF FELLOWS.
We bring together groups of Fellows to work on challenges that your organisation is facing.
Through our 8-week Consulting Project, our fellows bring fresh thinking to a problem – and their manpower and energy creates tangible outputs that have real value.
“THE 2013 YEAR HERE FELLOWS PUT TOGETHER HACKNEY'S FIRST 'HUMAN LIBRARY' IN THE TOWN HALL SQUARE IN JUST 24 HOURS. WE WERE ASTOUNDED BY THE ENERGY AND RESOURCEFULNESS THEY BROUGHT TO THE CHALLENGE. THEY STIMULATED ALL SORTS OF CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN HACKNEY RESIDENTS WHO OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET. IT WAS A BRILLIANT EXPERIENCE FOR US."
Andrew Sissons, Head of Regeneration, Hackney Council
CREATE A 21st CENTURY SETTLEMENT.
At the end of the 19th century, high-achieving graduates began moving into the slums of London to work in university-owned 'settlement houses', such as Toynbee Hall in Tower Hamlets (pictured), and worked on fixing the social problems they found there.
The model spawned some great innovations – like legal aid – and gave leading public servants like Clement Attlee and William Beveridge the insight, legitimacy and fire in the belly that would set them up to be among the 20th century’s most important social reformers.
In 2015, we launched our first 21st Century Settlement in Poplar, East London, in partnership with a local Housing Association, Poplar Harca, and the property guardianship social enterprise, Dot Dot Dot. Our Poplar Fellows spend the whole course living and volunteering in the same community. They live in flats that would otherwise be empty through our unique partnership with Dot Dot Dot, who place people who do brilliant volunteering in empty properties to provide security to landlords and inexpensive accommodation to residents.
