Katherine d’Apice

Katherine is a recent Geography graduate who conducted research throughout her degree focusing on inequalities associated with the current linear food system. Her time at the University of Birmingham and University of Minnesota, shaped her recognition for the need to find sustainable solutions to climate-induced stressors on the food system.

Alongside her studies, she pursued opportunities to enact social change. These include establishing a Birmingham gleaning network, ‘Glean for Brum’, which aims to redirect surplus, fresh produce from farms to those otherwise unable to access nutritious food. As well as creating a community garden, ‘Grow with Joe’, that gives young people the opportunity to exploit the recognised wellbeing benefits associated with therapeutic horticulture.

As Katherine is at the start of her professional career, she is committed to learning firsthand about current social issues facing society through her time at Year Here and is determined to enact positive social change.
