Rachel Smith

2015/16 Fellow

Rachel was a 2015/16 Fellow, placed at a Swan Housing Foyer for young homeless people where she developed The Shop, selling essential items for Mums and their babies in small volumes at cheap prices. She went on to work on a project to better understand older East Londoner’s relationship with the internet. She was mentored by the head of the Cabinet Office’s What Works programme, Laura Baynton.

Rachel is an engineer by training, with a focus on water, waste and energy in marginalised communities. Rachel worked on MyHepC, an online platform that connects Hepatitis C patients who aren’t able to access treatment via the NHS to alternative options. Before Year Here, she spent five years working for NGOs and social businesses in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
